PILLAR 01
Inertia, Mass & Newton’s Visual Second Law
Every object on screen possesses an implied density. A 10-ton obsidian monolith moves with tremendous resistance, accelerating slowly and demanding massive deceleration. When an animator moves heavy objects like weightless balloons, the illusion of reality instantly collapses. In digital motion design, force equals mass times acceleration: \(F = m \cdot a\).
PILLAR 02
Kinetic Tension, Anticipation & Violent Release
Linear, continuous movement is hypnotic and quickly induces visual fatigue. Compelling motion breathes through asymmetry. It compresses energy into a coiled spring (anticipation), holds the frame in agonizing stillness for a fraction of a second, and then releases that energy with violent, instantaneous velocity.
PILLAR 03
Temporal Polyphony & Multi-Speed Rhythms
Just as an orchestra balances deep cello sustain against rapid staccato violin arpeggios, motion design thrives on temporal polyphony. In any single frame, there must be elements moving at vastly different velocities: a slow, majestic macro-camera crane paired with rapid micro-mechanical gear ratchets and subtle ambient dust drift.
PILLAR 04
Physically-Based Optical Materiality
Flat vectors belong in early 2000s vector demos. Contemporary motion design commands the physics of light: Snell’s Law of Refraction, Fresnel equations, microfacet GGX specular highlights, and chromatic dispersion. When light physically scatters through a transparent crystal, it triggers subconscious tactile memories in the viewer.
PILLAR 05
Rhythmic Audiovisual Psychoacoustics
Audio and visual channels must never be conceived in isolation. The human ear perceives transient sound faster than the visual cortex perceives light. Hitting a visual transition precisely 1 to 2 frames before an acoustic sub-bass drop creates the illusion of organic physical synchronization, avoiding the unnatural "laggy" sensation of mathematically simultaneous cuts.
PILLAR 06
The Zen of Deceleration & Monumental Stillness
Amateurs fear stillness; they continuously spin, bounce, and shake every element on screen. True masters understand that stillness is the highest form of drama. After intense kinetic chaos, allowing a monolithic sculpture to settle into total equilibrium proves supreme creative authority.
